Great Outdoor Spaces Are Built Through Partnership
At Signature Lawn & Landscape, we believe the best outdoor spaces are built through collaboration. Every homeowner’s vision, budget, and skill set is different — and great landscaping doesn’t always mean a one-size-fits-all approach.
Sometimes, that means handling the entire project from start to finish. Other times, it means partnering with homeowners who want to take part in certain aspects of their outdoor space — like planting trees, shrubs, or finishing landscape details themselves.
And that’s perfectly okay.
A Collaborative Approach to Landscaping
One of our favorite projects involved a retaining wall built around a pool constructed by Speck USA. Signature Lawn & Landscape was responsible for building the retaining wall and creating the structure that anchored the space and supported the landscape design.
The homeowners, who have a strong green thumb, wanted to take on the planting themselves — selecting and installing their own trees, shrubs, and landscape features. Rather than treating this as an obstacle, we worked together to create a plan that fit their goals, timeline, and budget.
The result was a space that blended professional construction with personal touches — and a finished backyard that truly reflected how the homeowners wanted to use it.
Why Partnership Works
Landscaping projects often involve multiple components — grading, retaining walls, hardscaping, planting, lighting, and ongoing care. Not every homeowner wants (or needs) help with every step.
A partnership approach allows homeowners to:
-
Save money by handling parts of the project themselves
-
Stay involved in the creative process
-
Focus professional services where they matter most
-
Still achieve a cohesive, functional design
For larger projects especially, collaboration can make it possible to move forward with a design that might otherwise feel out of reach.
What Signature Typically Handles
When homeowners choose a collaborative project, Signature Lawn & Landscape often focuses on the elements that require professional expertise, equipment, and experience, such as:
-
Retaining walls and structural landscape features
-
Hardscaping and base preparation
-
Grading and drainage considerations
-
Landscape layout and design guidance

These foundational elements ensure the space is built correctly and will perform well long-term — especially with Iowa’s changing seasons and weather conditions.
Where Homeowners Often Jump In
Many homeowners enjoy taking part in the finishing details of their landscape, including:
-
Planting trees, shrubs, and perennials
-
Adding personal touches to landscape beds
-
Maintaining and caring for plants over time
By working together on a plan, we help ensure plant placement, spacing, and overall flow complement the structure of the landscape — even when homeowners complete the planting themselves.
Designed for Iowa Homes and Lifestyles
Every landscape we design is shaped by Iowa’s climate, soil conditions, and seasonal changes. Collaboration allows us to tailor projects to local needs while giving homeowners flexibility in how their outdoor space comes together.
Whether you live in Des Moines, Ankeny, Indianola, or surrounding communities, our goal is always the same: create outdoor spaces that are functional, durable, and built to last.
A Flexible Way to Bring Big Projects to Life
While we’re always happy to complete full landscape installations, we understand that flexibility matters. If partnering with homeowners allows a project to move forward — especially larger, more complex designs — we’re open to finding a solution that works for everyone.
Great outdoor spaces don’t come from rigid rules. They come from thoughtful planning, clear communication, and a shared vision.
If you’re thinking about a future landscape project and wondering what level of involvement makes sense for you, we’d be happy to talk through the options.
